On the Job
APC Construction, LLC successfully installed 12"x 55' pipes for a new Caesars hotel in downtown NOLA, completing Phase 1. The work continues in 2024, but it's unclear if it'll be before or after Mardi Gras.

Blue Iron Foundation & Shoring uses a PVE Equipment USA vibro for cofferdam sheet pile removal. The partnership between PDCA members also appeared when the contractor announced the first job for its new 170K lb., 1K+ HP, long-reach pile driving rig featuring a PVE Equipment hammer attachment.

CS Marine Constructors, Inc. has taken on a role in the Marine Improvement Project at the Port of Los Angeles. It'll bring barges and cranes to help remove and repair timber and PS concrete piling.

Dissen & Juhn and its crew replaced a bulkhead and installed a floating dock for Annapolis, MD, and earned a kind endorsement of their job site etiquette from the waterfront neighbors.

Island Piling, Inc. receives a powerful endorsement from a Ft. Myers Beach, FL, homebuilder, for its work installing piling, complete with an on-site seismologist, for a new residential development.

Omega Foundation Services wins a $2.7M sheet piling project near Boutte, LA. Teams will also perform clearing, grubbing and bank stabilization for the Primrose Canal.

PRECO-MSE partnered with Kiewit to finish an important phase of the Ottawa Light Rail Transit improvement in the Canadian capital. Fittingly, the project team celebrated at a Senators hockey game. One social media user says a T-shirt produced for the event is "The best piling shirt I've seen!!!"

SUS crews work on Sparrows Point, MD, job, where their ICE-International Construction Equipment hammer stays busy, driving and pulling. See video of their crane barge passing under the iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge as it is departs for another day on the waterfront job.

GeoQuip provided the HPSI hammer used to install JD Fields & Co. steel sheet pile for a 1,400-foot seawall at the Carbide Dock port facility in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

Tadano marketing guru Patrick Snow is supposed to make company cranes look good. He delivered in a recent LinkedIn campaign for the crawler crane, where he shows machines on job sites using mounted American Piledriving Equipment, HPSI and ICE hammers!

ESP Associates, Inc. joined City of Charleston, SC, officials to break ground on the $72.6M Ashley River Crossing Project. The highly unique initiative features a 4,100-foot-long bridge helping connect Florida to Maine, in the East Coast Greenway. All of that is beyond its significant impact on local infrastructure.

GRL Engineers, Inc. is on the construction roster for the Downtown Tampa Interchange Project in Florida. The contractor shares photos of an ICE-International Construction Equipment hammer installing H-pile from JD Fields & Co.
Planes, Trains, Automobiles...Drones and Horses?
If a visit to the world-famous Flora-Bama is a holiday tradition in your family, your future holds a new and improved drive across the State Route 161 bridge in Orange Beach. Through a contract with ALDOT, Scott Bridge Co. will begin rebuilding the bridge once it is through the procurement process.

London Calling  Drone imagery is valuable to construction. Dawson Construction Plant in the UK shares an aerial view of its Milton Keynes factory. The drone pilot avoids flying 54 miles southeast, and clear of Buckingham Palace airspace because Dave Brown doesn't want an angry call from King Charles.

Razing Arizona  Haley & Aldrich will lead a big clean-up under the tarmac at Arizona's Kingman Municipal Airport. It involves evacuating 40,000 cubic yards of hazardous waste consisting of smelted airplanes that were decommissioned after aerial combat in WWII. H&A promises updates on this job.

Can this train take you to where the puck is going to be? The City of Edmonton has a new option for transportation to Oilers games. Bechtel president Darren Mort says a new transit system it built through a partnership "rivals other world-class cities." The new development is worthy of a celly!

Let's go bowling! AAC leader SMU plays tomorrow for a conference title and awaits its bowl game assignment. The Mustangs have dominated behind stars like JD Fields-sponsored WR Roderick Daniels, Jr.

Thanks for reading the final installment of A Pile of News for 2023, we will be back with more musings about members in January. Remember, keep sharing your news with us! We appreciate your support and participation in PDCA. Until January 2, 2024, we wish you a happy and safe Holiday Season.

New in '24: No Dues Required for Qualifying Personnel from Govt., Academia

(L-R) Ian LaCour of Mississippi DOT is a sustaining PDCA member, Dr. Norma Jean Mattei of University of New Orleans presents at Annual Conference

During the November 2023 meeting, the PDCA Board of Directors unanimously adopted a change to the dues schedule for the organization impacting the Individual Membership category. Historically, this membership category required individuals from the public sector, namely academia and government employees, to issue a $95.00 dues payment to the organization on an annual basis.

New in 2024, qualifying individuals who are employed full-time in academia (a public or private, secondary, post-secondary, graduate, vocational or other approved educational institution), or in the public sector (local, state, federal governments), will be granted PDCA Individual Membership upon completion and remittance of the 2024 PDCA Membership Application; there is no longer a monetary dues cost associated with this membership category.

PDCA Board members were in agreement that organization resources such as the standing committees, publications, and educational programs, to name a few, could be enhanced through increased input and participation from DOT professionals, engineering faculty, and other public and academic sector parties who can provide important information and perspectives about driven pile foundations. Oftentimes, government agencies and academic institutions are unable to cover extracurricular costs for employees, requiring them to pay out-of-pocket for elective affiliations such as PDCA.

If you are a professional in academic or government sector employment and are uncertain if you meet the qualification requirements for a PDCA Individual Membership at no cost, please contact PDCA today at info@piledrivers.org or call 904-215-4771. Verble Elected to Lead Texas Chapter in 2024; Continued Growth is on the Agenda

Members of the PDCA Texas Chapter gathered Nov. 16 at Spindletap Brewery in Houston for its last 2023 meeting.

A 2024 golf tournament is a priority for the PDCA Texas Chapter, following the 2023 event that was a sold-out success. Proceeds raised during the September outing enable the Chapter to pursue initiatives that would improve the industry through quality educational opportunities and continue to broaden its reach to ensure Chapter accessibility to regional industry professionals. These were among the items members discussed during their November 16, 2023, meeting at Spindletap Brewery in Houston.

The final Chapter meeting for 2023 also featured the election of a new president and vice president to serve the organization next year. Condon Verble, the founding vice president of the Chapter since its inception in 2022, elected as the new president, succeeding Brandon Bicknell. Mickey Thatcher succeeds Verble as vice president. Secretary Mike Leal and Treasurer Derek Brodnax will continue in their roles until next election as the Chapter bylaws stagger the offices that are voted on each cycle, in order to maintain continuity in leadership.

The PDCA Texas Chapter thanks all members, supporters, sponsors, and attendees' of 2023 events and initiatives. There is significant momentum in the Texas pile driving industry, in part due to the reemergence of the Chapter which began operating in January 2022. The members have proven to be committed and very effective in developing a desirable industry organization that enables all professionals to participate in the shared goal of advancing the driven pile. PDCA Takes a Pile-Drive Through Maryland

During a week of events in and around Baltimore, such as the Engineers Driven Pile Institute and The Maryland Mixer, PDCA staff made time to drop by the offices of several members who operate in the fourth oldest U.S. state. During our pile-drive through its highways and by-ways, we were treated to breathtaking views of Chesapeake Bay, stunning displays of fall foliage, and a close up of the Appalachian Mountains as they protruded the western horizon during our road trip. The best part was meeting several PDCA members for the first time, such as those shown below:

Regional Networking Event in Baltimore Draws Enthusiastic Crowd of Pile Drivers

Contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, engineers, and other friends of the pile driving industry in and around Maryland gathered for The Maryland Mixer at Crooked Crab Brewing in Odenton on November 16th, the third PDCA regional reception of 2023. The regional receptions have been an ongoing program of the organization, designed to provide members with localized networking and social engagement opportunities in areas around the U.S. where an existing PDCA Chapter does not exist, but there is a high concentration of companies that are involved in the pile driving industry.

From 5:30-7:30 PM, attendees enjoyed complimentary pizza, wings, beer, and more while they reconnected with friends, business associates, and new industry connections. PDCA president Brian Heck, along with PDCA staff, were on -hand to deliver a short program where they encouraged attendees to consider establishing a formal chapter, similar to the previously operational PDCA Mid-Atlantic Chapter which served the region for several years before it closed.

Fortuitously, the inaugural PDCA Engineers Driven Pile Institute, had just completed its two-day run at a nearby convention center, and a handful of participants in that program ventured down the road to Crooked Crab to attend the social with the large group of piling industry professionals from Maryland.

The Maryland Mixer was a huge success, thanks to the generosity of several event sponsors, including 'Drive 'Em Deep' Sponsor APE-American Piledriving Equipment, Inc., which due to a last-minute cancelation, was not able to attend. PDCA thanks these event sponsors:
  • APE-American Piledriving Equipment
  • American Equipment & Foundation, Co.
  • Clydesdale Steel
  • Dissen & Juhn Company
  • Geoquip
  • Kokosing Construction Company, Inc.

EDPI Seminar Delivers Two Days of Pile Driving Education From Expert Panel

The inaugural PDCA Engineers Driven Pile Institute (EDPI) has concluded, and pile driving and engineering professionals from around the country are returning to their offices with new insights on selecting appropriate pile types, evaluating equipment, understanding key specifications, and 15.5 PDH credits. An expert panel delivered attendees a rigorous, two-day workshop designed to enhance their understanding of pile driving, beyond an entry level.

The noteworthy presenters included, Jerry DiMaggio, PE, D.GE, a senior principal civil engineer with Applied Research Associates. Also sharing industry knowledge and perspectives were Pat Hannigan, PE president emeritus and Van Komurka, PE, D.GE, a senior engineer; both with GRL Engineers, Inc.

The event took place at the Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport on November 15-16. By many accounts, the seminar was a unique opportunity to learn about design methods, inspection procedures, and more. The objective of the program was to ensure that professionals are equipped with the knowledge to stay competitive

PDCA thanks the 35 attendees, many of whom traveled great distances to participate, for being part of the inaugural EDPI class. Additionally, PDCA salutes event sponsors D.W. Kozera, Inc., The PDCA South Carolina Chapter, and GRL Engineers, Inc. for generously sponsoring the program.
